Sugatha Kumari (1933) is well known as a writer and activist in Kerala. She became famous as a poet environmentalist when she brought together a group of Malayalam writers in a campaign to save the Silent Valley rainforest, and through prakriti mushairas or poetry and song gatherings they gained public support for the campaign. Also involved in the struggle for women rights she launched a campaign to improve the situation of the mentally ill in psychiatric hospitals, and set up Abhaya (refuge) an organization providing shelter and services to women with mental health problems. She was appointed chairperson of Kerala’s State Commssion for women, and provided women with a public forum to bring forward their problems. Despite her success in helping to change the real world, she wants to return to the world of writing and creation.
