Ambai or C.S.Lakshmi (1944) is a distinguished Tamil writer. She is the Founder Trustee and Director, SPARROW (Sound & Picture Archives for Research on women - an NGO that is building a women’s archives with oral history, visual, picture and print material on women’s history and lives), a historian and creative writer and a feminist who attempts to evolve a new language to express contemporary life and relationships. Among the most original of modern Tamil writers, she is also rooted in Tamil literature and in modern Tamil culture. She links very old literary conventions with the post-modern story and uses fragmented and interspersed narrative-techniques which are normally used in a novel rather than in a story.
